West Bengal’s capital Kolkata was struck by a tragic accident at the Chaurbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal on Saturday, 17 October. At least 17 people were killed and around 20 were injured in the incident. Hospital sources said the dead included 13 women, three men and a child, while the injured were taken to a local medical college and several were later transferred to SSKM hospital. Medical staff reported that one patient is on a ventilator and efforts to save him are ongoing.
Eyewitnesses and police reported that heavy rain on Mahasaptami night prompted a large number of devotees to seek shelter inside the enclosure. The sudden influx exceeded the venue’s capacity, creating a crush. At some point a large section of the structure gave way, trapping people beneath the debris. Local residents began rescuing the injured before police joined the operation. Some attendees alleged that despite the presence of police and volunteers, effective rescue measures were delayed.
Following the tragedy, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Health Minister Dr Sharadwata Mukherjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand visited the site. The pandal has been sealed off and a state‑run helpline launched to assist victims’ families. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
